Emphasis will be placed on the social, cultural, and individual differences in sexual and reproductive attitudes, values, and behavior. This course is a survey of issues and attitudes associated with human sexuality. Introduction to the study of behavior, cognition, and emotion and general survey of psychological principles. PSY 1100 Introductory Psychology (4 credits) Topics include stress management, self-motivation, study skills, interpersonal relationships, and overcoming common anxieties. The arguments are clear and scholarly, and supported by a wealth of references. I recommend this book to health professionals looking for a deeper understanding of altruism and its motivation. There are sections on co-dependency, self-righteousness, the relevance of pathological altruism to eating disorders, the messianic effect, when caring for others becomes costly to children, and empathy research in psychology and social neuroscience. Many of the contributors argue that excessive altruism may be a symptom of a much wider syndrome, and this needs further research and enquiry.
But the point where it crosses a line, and becomes its own ‘dark side’, is not so readily acknowledged or understood. We think of altruism in terms of giving as worthy, commendable and beneficial.
